This Introductory Level course provides the basics for students with very little or no knowledge of English. It provides opportunities to practice basic conversation, reading, listening and writing. Vocabulary includes the names of everyday objects, occupations, food and clothing. Phrasing and conversation with other useful topics, such as health matters, and telling time are also practiced.
LEVEL 1
This Level 1 course is for students who have a little understanding of English. Conversation, listening, reading and writing are practiced with such skills as how to ask and answer questions, making comparisons with adjectives, recognizing differences in verb tenses, and using time expressions. Exercises use these skills including topics such as recreation, ordering in a restaurant, giving advice, and describing people and objects.
LEVEL 2
Level 2 is a continuation of the skills presented in Intro and Level 1. However, some students can begin at this level if they have some working knowledge of English. The grammar skills covered include additional work with verb tenses, adverbs, gerunds and infinitives. Some topics used for practicing these skills include transportation, travel, housing, jobs, holidays and customs.
LEVEL 3
Level 3 continues to develop the skills presented in previous levels. More complex phrasing and speaking are stressed. Additional practice uses gerunds, relative pronouns, and passive voice. Skills include ways to express feelings, human behavior, preferences and different types of damage (burnt, scratched, torn, leaking, etc.). Completing Level 3 should result in acceptable English fluency for most situations.
PASSAGES 1
This Level 5 course is designed for students who have completed the Interchange Level 3 or who have acceptable fluency in English and wish to improve their speaking, listening and writing skills. It can be very useful for those who want to make a transition from regular ESL skills to possibly later prepare for the TOEFL test or college level work.
PASSAGES 2
This Level 6 course continues to develop the English communication skills presented in Passages 1. The speaking, listening, reading and writing skills are on an even more advanced level. The grammar, vocabulary and written composition practice can be very helpful for those wishing to prepare for the English GED or TOEFL tests or take college classes in English.
Private Classes We offer private classes for students who cannot come to regularly scheduled classes or who want individualized instruction to meet their specific needs. Private classes are given at all levels - beginning, intermediate, and advanced - to learn or improve English. Private classes are also available to prepare for the GED, TOEFL, and US citizenship tests.
